I do know about you however I get at least 4-5 credit card or insurance solicitations every week in the mail! And, because I am diligent, I open them up and ensure I shred the form that has my pre-printed name and address on it. Failing to do this opens you up to someone else rummaging through your garbage to find things exactly like this and opening up an account in your name…Identity Theft.
Then I thought about it and said to myself, there must be some way I can get these credit card companies or insurance companies to stop sending me this “junk” mail; and sure enough there is. I am in the process of giving it a go right now, so hopefully this works. Therefore, let us show you how to opt of solicitations.
First and foremost you should know that there are now four (4) credit bureaus you have to deal with now, versus the traditional three (3). These credit bureaus are Equifax, Experian, Innovis, and TransUnion, (Innovis being the new company to the party.)
Unfortunately for us, the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), these Consumer Credit Reporting Companies are permitted to include your name on lists used by creditors or insurers to make offers of credit or insurance that are not initiated by you. However, they also must provide you with the right to “Opt-Out” from these solicitations if you want to. This then prevents these Consumer Credit Reporting Companies from providing your credit file information to these companies.
Keep in mind that if you choose to Opt-Out, you will no longer be included in the offer lists provided by these four consumer credit reporting companies. Conversely, if you are not receiving offers from these companies and want to be added to their lists, you can “Opt-In” to these solicitations.”
So how do you go about Opting Out, or Opting in for that matter:
The easiest way is to go to this web site: https://www.optoutprescreen.com/?rf=t, and follow the instructions on the page. You will be sent to a form to fill out which will require you to provide your social security number. If you are uncomfortable with that, I will discuss another way in a moment.
You can opt out of solicitations for 5 years or for life. I choose life because if I ever do need another credit card or insurance I can go to Bank Rate and find the best credit card available for my situation or eInsuance if I need more life insurance.
To opt out of solicitations for 5 years, all you need to do is fill out this one form and submit it. The form in turn will be sent to the four credit bureaus and you are done. If you would like to out of solicitations for life, you have one added step. Once you submit your form you have to print it out, sign it, and mail it into the address that will be provided for you. The entire process takes less than 5 minutes and you are done.
Finally, if for some reason you are having difficulties submitting your request through this website, or feel uncomfortable about writing your social security number on the Internet, you can call 888-567-8688 and they will process your request for you.
